One Piece Episode 963

Summary:

Oden attempts to join Whitebeard’s crew, but he refuses due to Oden’s nature. Whitebeard puts Oden to a test: if he can hold on to the chain being towed by the ship for three days, he will be allowed to join the crew. Although Oden has almost completed the challenge, he leaves it to save a woman in distress.

Oden went ashore and immediately began a battle with Whitebeard, but was immediately defeated. Oden asks Whitebeard to allow him to join his crew, but he refuses, saying that he was not a loyal person and therefore would not be good at serving anyone else. Kin’emon was also against Oden setting sail due to his duties as a daimyo.

Two weeks passed and Whitebeard’s men finished repairing his ship Moby Dick. Whitebeard decided to set sail at night to prevent Oden from joining, but Oden snuck up and tried to board the ship anyway. He held on to a chain tied to the mast of the ship and carried himself with the ship. Izou chased after Oden and held him in an attempt to prevent him from floating.

Marco rescued Izou from the water and carried him aboard. However, Oden was not saved and was dragged by the turbulent waters, bumping into rocks along the way. Whitebeard promised Oden that he would let him into the crew if he kept the chain for three days. Oden accepted the challenge while going down a waterfall, getting eaten by a fish and being dragged by the icy waters.

Three days passed and an hour left. Oden held on tightly to the chain, but his body was badly swollen from the impact with the water. However, he heard the scream of a woman who was being harassed on a nearby island, Amatsuki Toki. Oden let go of the chain, swam to the island and scared off the villains.
The anime adds the following:
Scene of Oden looking at the map.
The villagers spotting the whitebeard pirates before the official reports to Kanjur, a message that Oden overhears.
Izou runs with Kin’emon and Kanjuro after Oden who is running towards the Whitebeard Pirates.
A scene showing the initial hostility between the Whitebeard Pirates and the Sheath.
Oden and Whitebeard drink alcohol together.
After Whitebeard refused to take Oden, the Sheaths dragged Oden away and later locked him in a room.
Oden hears Toki in trouble as he goes to grab the chain.
The fight between Oden and Whitebeard drags on and ends with Whitebeard punching Oden in the face.
When Toki first appeared, the manga showed her to have some bruises. In the anime, Toki appears completely unharmed.
Unlike the manga, Toki begins to jump into the future, but was interrupted by Oden’s arrival.
