As a child, Luffy befriended Shanks, a pirate captain living in his home village. While Luffy and Shanks’ pirates were at the bar, Luffy unknowingly ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a devil fruit that Shanks obtained during his travels. After consuming the fruit, Luffy’s body immediately gained rubber-like properties, but he permanently lost the ability to swim.
However, Luffy was terrorized and threatened by Higuma and his band of mountain bandits. Although Shanks and his pirates came to his aid, Higuma escaped and kidnapped Luffy. Higuma sailed out to sea in a small rowboat and threw Luffy into the sea to drown. However, the Sea King appeared, a carnivorous sea monster that ate Higuma whole and threatened to target Luffy next. Shanks saved Luffy, but lost his left arm in the process.
Finally, the Red-Haired Pirates left Foosha Village and set sail for the Grand Line. Just before he left, Shanks entrusted Luffy with his straw hat to protect him. Over the years, Luffy has cherished his hat to remind him of his idol.
Back in the present, Luffy is kidnapped by a bird and sent flying away. Stranded at sea, the Buggy Pirates discover Zoro’s rowboat, board it, and attempt to hijack it, but are quickly defeated by it. The Buggy Pirates explain that Buggy is a fearsome pirate with a Devil Fruit ability of his own.
Meanwhile, the bird lets go of Luffy after being shot down by cannon fire, causing Luffy to fall into Buggy’s territory. He first meets the thief who stole the map and was chased by the Buggy Pirates.
An episode based on the first chapter of the manga, but the final part showing Luffy leaving Foosh Village is cut in the anime adaptation until episode 504. In this episode, we are introduced to Shanks and his crew.
This was Haki’s first appearance. Shanks uses it against the Lord of the Coast.
In the manga, Luffy cut his face and created a scar under his left eye to prove to Shanks that he is a real man, but this is not shown in this episode.
In the manga, before Higuma appeared, Luffy was already eating devil fruit and Shanks didn’t find out until he grabbed Luffy’s arm and watched him stretch. In the anime, after Higuma left, Luffy found a Devil Fruit in a chest and started eating it. Shanks caught him and turned him upside down to spit it out, ending up with his body falling to the floor with Shanks still holding onto his legs.
In the manga, when Shanks lost his arm, there was blood dripping, but in the anime, this is not the case.
This is the first episode of the Orange Town Arc.
