Summary:
The mysterious Duval is thrilled when the crew that rescued Camie turn out to be the Straw Hat Pirates. He claims one of them ruined his life. Shortly after, the crew discovers that Camie’s boyfriend is Hachi.
After a brief initial encounter with the flying fish riders, the Straw Hat Pirates begin planning to rescue Camie’s fisherman friend. Luffy is excited about their flying fish. Usopp asks Franky to move the cannons up on deck so they can shoot down the flying fish. Camie is worried about “Hacchin”, but Pappag says she should worry about herself since she’s the one the Macro Pirates are after. At their compound, Duval tells the Riders that he called off the attack because he wanted to kill the man who ruined his own life. He thanks the Macropirates for their help; little did he know that their alliance would accelerate his finding of the Straw Hats.
Hearing this scares the Macro Pirates’ hostage: Hatchan, a Fish-Man Octopus who was a member of the Arlong Pirates long before. He is distraught that the very pirates who defeated him before are now coming to his rescue. He knows that Nami will be among them and realizes that once he finds out who she is, she won’t save him anymore. When the Thousand Sunny arrives at Duval’s compound, they place Hatchan in a cage, despite a last-ditch effort to bribe the macro pirates into freeing him with takoyaki. Nami continues to show concern as everyone refers to Camie’s friend as “Hacchin”. When Hatchan sees the ship and recognizes the crew, he makes a last ditch effort to get out of his cage before spitting ink on himself in a thin attempt at disguise.
No one else is around the “Hacchin” cage; The Straw Hats are sure it is being used as some sort of trap. As they approach the inky creature, he pleads with Camie to turn around, that he will free himself and somehow join them. The longer they last, the more doubts grow among the Straw Hats who fought Arlong. Sanji calls, asking how Arlong is doing. Hatchan replies that Arlong and the others were captured by the marines, but he escaped to pursue his dream as a takoyaki chef. Luffy recognizes him immediately; Hatchan curses himself for letting it slip.
Usopp explains to the newer crew members how Arlong ruled Nami’s home island and Luffy defeated them. Zoro firmly tells Camie that Hatchan is not their friend. Luffy interrupts the rescue, but before they move to leave, he asks how good his takoyaki is. Hatchan understands that this is exactly what will happen, but Camie and Pappag refuse to believe that they will keep their promise. They jump overboard to save him themselves… only to be caught by the Macro Pirates within seconds. Hatchan starts crying and shaking in his cage, trying to get out to save Camie. Seeing his efforts, Nami steps back and tells the crew to go save Hatchan. He says that they promised Camie, and Hatchan is probably harmless to them by now. Luffy agrees, but it’s clear that he still just wants takoyaki.
Relaxing for a moment with his helmet off, Duval calls his companions to the Den Den Mushi and asks if his men’s “preparations” are complete. Luffy jumps off the ship, grabs Camie and Pappago with the Gomu Gomu no Pistol, and then uses Hatchan’s cage as a springboard to reach Duval’s compound. Macro is surprised that he is a Devil Fruit user. Luffy orders Zoro to cut open Hatchan’s cage, but the octopus warns them that the flying fish riders’ trap has been set. Duval gives the order and the flying fish riders rise from the ocean, circling the complex and the Thousand Sunny. Luffy orders his crew to prepare for battle and assures Camie that they are ready for anything.
